Winter 2012

It is time for pitchers and catchers to report to Spring Training and baseball will begin.  The Phillies look like the team to beat in the National League, again.  But, we all know that you have to play the games in order to be the champions.  It takes dedication and practice to get better.

We have to do that as well.  We have to continue to practice, work hard, and be dedicated to being our best.  Much like the Phillies, we have to perform when it counts.  You are probably getting tired of hearing this but it is so true.  Our students and teachers are working hard.  Everyone is preparing to get better; we can only hope that when it comes time to perform we are ready.  It is very important that you help us get ready, too.

The students have continued to strive to become better writers.  They have participated in our Test Stamina Days, our demand writing in the class, our focused instruction, and their sharing of what they have done with you.  We have had two Test Stamina days this year.  These Test Stamina Days give our students practice in test taking strategies.  The three areas that are measured are: Mathematics, Reading, and Writing.  Our next Test Stamina Day will be on March 1.

The staff continues to meet to review data.  They are identifying new instructional strategies to help their students.  The teachers have developed a Writing and Reading Calendar to help pace their instruction.  These calendars make sure that the material being tested on the NJASK is covered.  Our mathematics program is set up in a similar way.  The staff developed a pacing guide to ensure that the skills tested are covered.  Math Factoring was an area of focus that was identified in the fall.  The teachers instituted Rocket Math to address this area of weakness.

Our RTI Period was introduced in the fall.  Forty minutes each morning has been set aside to meet with students in grades 3 and 4 that need support in specific areas.  These students were identified through various assessments, including AIMSweb.  This type of instruction is called an intervention.  We are half way through the school year and we are seeing this program having a positive impact on our students.

Those students not involved in the interventions are part of a cycle class.  In these classes, the students are given extra attention/enrichment in the areas of writing, reading, and mathematics.  So, our spring training began in the fall and we are still preparing to get better.

ATTENTION Sixth Grade parents!!!!!!  As the school year moves into the Third Marking Period there are some important events that are coming up.  Our Sixth Grade Parent Organization has our Sportacular on February 24.  This is a fund raising event for a trip that has been planned by the organization for our students.  Separately, you should have received information about our annual Sixth Grade trips to Philadelphia and the Brandywine Picnic Park.  If you have not received this information, please call the office.

In March, the high school guidance department has planned an evening for you to come in and listen to a presentation about 7th Grade.  I really think that this is an important program you should attend to listen to the information and get your questions about next year answered.  Finally, the next important date you should have on your calendar is our annual Parent Night to discuss the NJASK, on March 8 at 6:00 PM in the all-purpose room.  As you can see there is a lot going on here at Mansion Avenue School.

Until next time, see you around the neighborhood.
